Our Varietals

Cabernet sauvignon is a Vitis vinifera grape varietal well planted in all winegrapes growing regions of the world. A small tough-skinned grape that hangs in a loose cluster, it produces a high quality, long-lived wine. Our vineyard continually cycles blocks through planting, young growth, maturity and replanting to maintain the optimum characteristics of each rootstock/clone union. Our blocks are a mixture of American and French clones on 5BB and 5C. More Cabernet sauvignon information

Merlot is also well represented on the world stage and is a Vitis vinifera varietal. It is grown in all the same areas as Cabernet sauvignon and is commonly used in blends with it. It ripens earily than Cabernet sauvignon and can add a softness and fruitiness to the blend. Our Merlot is planted at our home ranch and is primarily clone 3 on St. George, 5C and 110R rootstocks. Zinfandel originates from a small area in Croatia where it is called "Crljenak Kastelanski". A discussion of the recent Carole Meredith sleuthing triumph is in this article by Frank Prial. A Vitis vinifera varietal, it produces an intensely flavored red wine that can be vinified as a lively fruity wine for drinking young or made into an intensely colored red wine that will respond well to long ageing. For an overview of Dry Creek Zinfandel, please read this article at K&L Wine Merchants. Our Zinfandel vineyard is grown on the classic benchland of Dry Creek Valley where our 40 year old vines are head trained. To read a discussion of head versus cordon training please jump to the ZAP website.
