MERLOT

Merlot is a softer version of Cabernet, with berry aroma and flavors around a "softer" core of tannins. Early ripening, this grape can stand alone as a fruity, soft red wine or act as a blending grape with other Meritage varietals. Merlot is thought to be descended from Cabernet franc and a sibling of Cabernet sauvignon. One of the earliest varieties to bloom in Spring, Merlot is susceptible to frost damage. Bunches are typically loose like Cabernet and can withstand some late rains.

Our Merlot is planted on a VSP trellis system at our main ranch that allows us to easily control all aspects of vine growth and cluster sun exposure. Normally cultivated with a medium vigor cover crop, we occasionally disc the cover crop under in the Spring if rainfall amounts have been low. Our five blocks are all planted to different rootstocks and are individually pressure bomb tested and deficit irrigated.

More Merlot information is available at the Cellar Notes website and the Professional Friends of Wine website.
