Manipulating the Trellis

Our crew is now working extensively on our VSP trellis systems. They are removing extra shoots to promote better light exposure for the fruit along the cordons; shifting errant shoots on the morning side up into the VSP wires; moving afternoon shoots up into their protective shade positions using either our unique "V" arm or custom wire extender; and removing shoots from the rootstock at the base of the vines called suckers.

These efforts take much time and effort and are an important task to complete soon after set so that the developing berries get used to the sun exposure we provide. Morning sun exposure has been proven to decrease vegetative and increase fruity compounds as well as help develop deeper coloring compounds.

Sbragia Family Winery Earns 91 Point Rating from Wine Spectator!

Sbragia Sauvignon blanc label

Wine Spectator has awarded the 2008 Sbragia Family Sauvignon blanc from our vineyard, labeled as "Schmidt Ranch", 91 points!!! Comments: Peach, marmalade, nectarine, pear, spice and apple flavors are elegant, yet rich and ripe, with refreshing acidity. Spicy almond skin notes come forward on the finish.

IT'S FINALLY WARM AND WE ARE MOVING CLOSER TO HARVEST! THE BERRIES ARE NOW PEA-SIZED AND WILL BE SLOWLY RIPENING OVER THE SUMMER. PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US TO EXPERIENCE HARVEST 2010 IN THE VINEYARD!

We have many white and red varieties in the vineyard that produce great single varietals or white or red meritage blends. Varieties for sale include:

We are located in the heart of the Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County and are proud to produce great wine grapes using sustainable winegrowing practices. Established in 1856, our family owned vineyard produces premium winegrapes for a number of major wineries and an enthusiastic clientele of home winemakers.

Janice SchmidtWhether you are a new to winemaking or a veteran winemaker, our grapes should provide a solid foundation for your 2009 vintage wines. Enology advice is available from Janice Schmidt, a UC Davis trained enologist, who worked for Jordan Vineyard and Winery for 20 years before retiring. She takes pride in guiding home winemakers in the complex yet rewarding process of making wine.

You can pick or have us pick your grapes and we will crush them in our stainless steel Zambelli crusher for free! We can provide your beginning winemaking additive needs: initial SO2 addition, enzymes, yeast nutrients, yeast (ICV D254) and ML bacteria (Enoferm Alpha).

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current state activity to prevent the spread of EGVM (European Grapevine Moth) that was found last year in Napa Valley - we have been advised by our County Ag Commissioner that home winemakers need to have their fruit crushed and SO2 adjusted here unless they want to seek a permit to transfer intact fruit into their own county. This is because you would need to pass through quarantine zones to get your fruit back home. WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY UNDER QUARANTINE. Several moths were found in Healdsburg and a 5 mile quarantine zone was established that we are outside of. The government is working furiously to find and contain any moths that are found. Email me if you have any other questions!
